PMA® Certified Pilates Teacher
Shelby took her first Pilates class in 2010 and was instantly struck by the way it encourages an achievable integrity of movement while nurturing the mind-body connection.
When, in 2015, Shelby was diagnosed with advanced stage cancer, she began exploring Pilates as a rehabilitative practice and contends that Pilates was integral to her recovery, both physically and emotionally.
Shelby's teaching is unassuming and playful, and reflects her multi-tiered approach to living a healthy life. She thrives on helping both the healthy and the infirm achieve physical wellness and a healthy sense of self.
I continue to work on improving my body after a car accident 4 years ago that left me with signifigant injuries to all 4 limbs and a shattered hip: Gym workouts for overall strength, Massage and Rolfing to deal with scar tissue and the bigger limitations they create. These steps have lead me to Shelby Walters and Pilates at Somaspace to help me sort out all the postural habits created during recovery. The expectations I had of my body and the muscle memory of 40+ years were lost during my initial recovery but we are slowly rebuilding new "memories" and control in the deep intrinsic muscles in what we like to call our "core". Activating muscles while diminishing pain and inefficient postural habits. I am thrilled to work with Shelby and so comfortable and confident in everything she brings to our sessions. Highly recommended.
Shelby's journey to helping others began in 2003 when she completed her Masters of Physical Therapy (MPT), specializing in vertigo, balance disorders, and geriatric mobility. She has since trained at the Professional Yoga Therapy Institute in North Carolina, completed a 600-hour Classical Pilates Apprenticeship at Somaspace, and earned her Oncology Rehabilitation Specialist certificate from the Physiological Oncology Rehabilitation Institute for healthcare professionals.
Shelby is my favorite because her background as a physical therapist makes her super knowledgeable about all the in-depth body mechanics stuff which we actually spend a lot of time working on. (She seriously stares at my feet to see which tiny muscle needs to be engaged!) I also just love spending time with her, we share a sense of humor of not taking ourselves too seriously!
Shelby specializes in working with geriatric clients, cancer patients, individuals with osteoporosis, and anyone preparing for surgery or recovering from illness or injury.
